USFWS declines to list giant earthworm as endangered

Environmental groups petitioned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list the rarely seen Palouse earthworm, which can grow up to 3 feet long and are thought to be abundant in eastern Washington, as an endangered species in August of 2006, but federal officials said the petition lacked sufficient scientific data to prompt an endangered listing.
