A George County man was arrested Tuesday night on federal charges accusing him of illegally killing a black bear, an endangered species in the state, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

In addition, the four-count indictment handed down in May accuses Darryl Eubanks of the illegal transportation of a black bear, obstruction of justice for tampering with a witness and proving false statements to federal investigators.

Eubanks is accused of killing the black bear in January. The carcass was found in Perry County.

If convicted, Eubanks could go to prison for 12 years and pay fines of up to $250,000.
