Saimaa Ringed Seal Remains Endangered

YLE NEWS

Deaths of rare Saimaa ringed seals could again this year exceed the number of births. Already some 22 dead seals have been found in the Saimaa lake district this year.

According to a long-term inventory carried out by the protecting body Metsähallitus, only about half of all dead seals are found. In practice this means the fatality level is much higher.

Some 50 pups have been born this year. The Saimaa ringed seal population has not increased for three consecutive years.

The Saimaa Ringed Seal is an endangered species and around 270 individuals are thought to exist. They are indigenous to the Lake Saimaa region of south-east Finland.
