Perth Customs catch two men smuggling endangered fungi

Customs investigators have charged two German nationals accused of trying to smuggle a large quantity of endangered fungi out of Australia.

A 48-year-old man and a 67-year-old man were stopped by customs officers when they were attempting to fly out of Perth International Airport.

During a search, they found 160 mushrooms and fungi spore samples in the baggage of the passengers.

Customs National Manager of Investigations Richard Janeczko said Australia should not be seen as an easy mark for anyone trying to smuggle illegal items out of the country.

“The detection should send a strong signal that customs is able to detect such attempts and takes the role of protecting the environment seriously,” Mr Janeczko said.

The men have been charged with exporting a regulated native species without a permit and are expected to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
