Taiwanese white dolphins facing extinction: environmental groups

Taiwan’s endangered white dolphins are on the verge of extinction. That was the word from a wildlife conservation group on Sunday.

The Taiwan Environmental Protection Union said that the number of the dolphins now stands at only 60 to 90 off Taiwan’s west coast. The union also said the white dolphins — also known as Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins – might become extinct within 10 years if industrial development in the area is not halted.

The union called on the public to purchase public land near the dolphins’ habitat and put that land into trust to protect the critically endangered species.

Meanwhile, the Taiwan Environmental Information Center said white dolphins have an extremely low birth rate and a life span of 30-40 years.
