US proposes protection for 2 mussels species

Two fresh water mussels species, including one believed still in Kentucky, could be protected under a federal proposal.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wants endangered species protection for the snuff box and the rayed bean.

The Courier-Journal reports the snuff box is believed to still be in Kentucky waterways including Tygarts Creek, Licking River, Middle Fork of the Kentucky River, the Red River and the Green River.

The agency says the rayed bean could be in the St. Joseph River in Indiana. The snuff box may also be in Indiana waterways including the Pigeon River, Salamonie River, Tippecanoe River, Sugar Creek, Buck Creek and the Muscatatuck River.
