Extinction’ risk for vulnerable birds

CRAWLEY OBSERVER

VULNERABLE birds could become extinct if ‘secret’ EU plans to scrap funding for wildlife-friendly grants are passed, the RSPB has warned.

The RSPB is concerned that the European Union is considering scrapping payments to farmers to protect vulnerable species on their land.

This would wipe out funds targeted towards declining species such as the corn bunting, lapwing and grey partridge.

RSPB conservation director Martin Harper said: “If the EU continues with this plan, there is no doubt wildlife will suffer, with the possible ultimate UK extinction of some threatened species.”
