Endangered Whooping Crane Shot In Indiana

INDIANA PUBLIC MEDIA

Indiana conservation officers are looking for the person responsible for shooting an endangered animal in Jackson County. A whooping crane was reported shot in an area near Crothersville.

Officials determined the male bird died from a shotgun wound. There are only 500 known whooping cranes in existence in the United States and are federally protected. Officials are offering a reward for information that leads to the arrest and prosecution of the persons responsible for the birdโ€˜s death.

All whooping cranes in the U.S. are tagged and tracked to monitor their migration patterns. The bird that was killed was known as โ€œbird 605โ€ณ and was discovered in the Muscatatuck Basin by a tracker and photographer with the International Whooping Crane Foundation.
