Endangered Whooping Crane Shot In Indiana

Indiana conservation officers are looking for the person responsible for shooting an endangered animal in Jackson County. A whooping crane was reported shot in an area near Crothersville.

Officials determined the male bird died from a shotgun wound. There are only 500 known whooping cranes in existence in the United States and are federally protected. Officials are offering a reward for information that leads to the arrest and prosecution of the persons responsible for the bird‘s death.

All whooping cranes in the U.S. are tagged and tracked to monitor their migration patterns. The bird that was killed was known as “bird 605″ and was discovered in the Muscatatuck Basin by a tracker and photographer with the International Whooping Crane Foundation.
